Tried to make bread pudding with 3 rock hard hamburger buns and ended up with savory french toast instead
So last Thursday around 1am I pulled three stale buns out of the fridge, and I figured bread pudding would save them. But I forgot I had zero cinnamon, zero vanilla, and only a splash of milk, so I mixed eggs, salt, pepper, and a little garlic powder and pan fried the whole thing like a big pancake. It actually came out great, crispy on the outside and soft inside, and I ate it with leftover chili on top. My roommate asked what it was and I said savory french toast and he looked at me like I was crazy until he tried it. What do you all do with buns that are too hard to even toast?
I read somewhere that old stale bread makes the best french toast because it soaks up the egg mix way better than fresh stuff. Your burger bun version sounds like a smart save, and that garlic powder move with the chili on top is kinda genius. If my buns get too hard to even toast I usually run them under water real quick then throw them in a hot oven for a few minutes, they soften right back up. Worst case I tear them into croutons or blitz them in the blender for breadcrumbs if I'm feeling fancy.
