Crossed a balayage on virgin hair against pre-lightened, never again

I had a client last month, hair untouched, wanted a soft sunkissed look. I spent two hours on her sectioning and it came out like a dream. Then my next booking had box dyed hair from three years ago and I tried the same pattern without adjusting. That one turned muddy around her crown and I had to redo half of it in a panic. The difference is porosity, not product. Virgin hair holds the lift where you place it, but pre-lightened strands pull color up and out way faster. I ended up saving it with a toner at level 8, but my whole afternoon schedule tanked. Has anyone else found that changing your sectioning size for previously colored hair makes more of a difference than the formula itself?
