My booth rent went up $200 overnight with zero notice

I overheard another stylist saying she just accepts rent hikes because 'you gotta pay to play in a good salon.' But I know three girls who walked out when their landlord pulled the same thing last year. Is it smarter to negotiate hard or just find a new space when they treat you like that?

Jumped in and backed @william_jackson65 right away because I sat through the exact same thing at my last spot. Landlord tried to bump my rent $250 with a sticky note on the mirror the night before payday. I watched two other girls pack up their chairs that same week and walk out with zero warning. They ended up splitting a suite together down the road and are making more money now than they ever did paying booth rent. No explanation, no warning, just a new number on a piece of paper - that's not how you run a business.

My friend Michelle had a landlord try that and she just packed her chair up that night and moved into another salon two blocks over. Did the landlord even offer to explain the increase or just slip in a new invoice?

Honestly, negotiate hard but have your backup plan ready. Tbh I tried to haggle once and just ended up agreeing to pay more because I'm a pushover who hates confrontation. Learned my lesson when the owner bought a new car two weeks later.
