My instructor was right about sectioning hair, I finally get it
Back in cosmetology school, Mrs. Alvarez drilled us on sectioning every client, even quick trims. I thought it was a waste of time and just skipped it for simple cuts. Last month, I did a layered bob on a regular client without sectioning and it came out crooked in the back. She had to come back twice for fixes, and I felt awful about it. After that, I started timing myself with sectioning clips on every cut. It only adds like 5 minutes but the result is so much more even and my clients notice the difference. Now I tell new assistants to just trust the process, it saves you from redoing work. Has anyone else had a classroom rule that made no sense until it bit you in a real appointment?
Didn't we all have that one instructor who drove us crazy with stuff that seemed pointless? I fought the whole sectioning thing too until I messed up a blunt cut so bad the client had to go somewhere else to fix it, and that was a hard lesson on my part. Now I won't even do a bang trim without clipping things off, it just keeps the lines honest and saves everybody the headache of a repeat visit.
