Question about a stubborn color correction on a client with old box dye

Had a client with years of black box dye wanting a cool blonde; the first color removal took 4 hours and still left a red base. Has anyone else found a better method for that specific orange-red stage?

Remember trying to lift a similar color years ago. Ended up using a green-based toner to knock out the orange, but it was a whole mess.

Oh man, why is it always green that seems like a good idea at the time? I tried that exact move on my own hair once and looked like I had moss growing on my head for a solid month. It's like the color wheel betrays you the second you actually need it to work. I had to wear so many hats that summer.
