Realized I'd been holding my shears wrong for 6 years after a client casually mentioned my hand cramp

I was clipping away on a layered bob in Seattle last Tuesday when the client asked if I always grip my scissors like I'm choking a snake, and that's when it hit me that every little ache I blamed on long hours was actually just bad technique, has anyone else had a random comment totally change the way you work?

Holding shears wrong for 6 years sounds like a lot but honestly half the stylists I know have some weird grip and they're fine. Maybe the cramp was just from doing 8 cuts in a row without a break, not the scissors themselves. Swapped to ergonomic grips once and hated them, went right back to my old way. Seems like one of those things where if it's not causing a real injury like carpal tunnel, people just overthink it.

Oh man, I used to think you just had to tough out the sore hands, but after a barber friend pointed out my grip was way too tight I totally changed how I hold everything and it's night and day.
