The first time I saw a client ask for a 'lived-in' color

Three years ago at the salon in Tacoma, a new client brought in a picture from a magazine asking for 'lived-in' color, and I had to figure out what she meant on the spot. Last month, I did three balayage appointments in a single day, all asking for that same low-maintenance, grown-out look. Just last week, I realized I've completely stopped doing traditional, solid-color foil highlights for anyone under 40. It's wild how fast the demand shifted from perfect, uniform color to something that's meant to look a bit undone. Has anyone else had to totally rethink their color technique book in the last few years?

Oh man, tell me about it... my foil packets are collecting dust.

Yeah, it really is all about that soft grow-out now. I keep telling clients, like @perez.patricia said, the goal is to make their next appointment less urgent, not more. Mastering a good shadow root has become way more important than perfect foil placement.
