Unpopular opinion: My mentor told me I was using too much developer and I laughed it off

My mentor at the salon in Austin said I was pouring 40 volume when I only needed 20 for a root touch-up. I ignored her for 3 months thinking she was being extra careful. After frying a client's ends so bad they turned gummy, I realized she was RIGHT all along. Has anyone else had a senior stylist give advice that felt wrong but turned out to save your reputation?

Oh man, I had a similar wake-up call when my first salon manager kept telling me to slow down my sectioning. I thought I was being fast and efficient until I saw the uneven results and realized she was trying to save me from fixing bad work later.

Did you keep a few of those early haircuts as proof of how bad it could get? I look back at my first week's work sometimes and it's like a before picture for why you need to trust the process. Sloppy sectioning really does come back to haunt you when you're fixing it for free because the client called back.

Ha, @susana66 I still have a photo of my first attempt at layers and it looks like a lawnmower attack!
