A retired operator in Tulsa stopped me mid lift and said my outriggers were too close to the trench
Was setting up a Grove 40 ton by a drainage ditch off Peoria Ave, and this older guy watching from the fence called it. I had a pad maybe 3 feet from the edge and he said he buried a rig the same way back in '98. Told him I've done this a hundred times, but I slid the pads back 6 feet anyway. Anyone else had an old head on a job site catch something you missed?
There was a study from the 90s about crane tip overs and soil pressure near trenches. Something like 80 percent of them happened when the outrigger was within 5 feet of the edge. The soil just gives out even if it looks solid on top. That old guy probably saved you a really bad day.
