A rigger in Houston called me out on my hand signals last month
He said my 'stop' signal was too close to my 'swing' signal and it was making him nervous. I watched a video of myself and he was totally right, my arm was only moving a few inches. Now I make every signal big and clear, like I'm trying to flag down a plane. Has anyone else had a crew member give you a safety tip that stuck?

Remember my buddy's crane signal mix-up last week?

Got me thinking about all the little things we do without realizing. Like using the same hand for hold and go ahead, just changing the finger. Saw a guy almost get clipped because his spotter misread it in low light. Now I make sure my whole body is part of the signal, stepping into it so there's zero chance of a mix-up. That kind of clear talk without words keeps everyone safe.

Wait, he almost got hit because of a finger mix-up? That's terrifying. I mean, in low light a pointed finger and a thumbs-up probably look the same from a distance. Makes total sense to use your whole body now.
