Guy on site 3 weeks ago told me to stop feathering the brake, game changer
I've been running a 150 ton Liebherr for about 6 years now and always eased the load down real gentle, thought that was the right way. This old timer from the steel crew said I was wasting everyone's time and putting extra wear on the swing bearing by feathering it all the way. He told me to learn the load's rhythm and just set it in one clean motion once I'm below the spotter's hand signal, and honestly after trying it for a day, it's smoother and my forearm doesn't cramp up by 2pm. Anyone else get told to stop doing something they thought was the safe habit, or is it just me? The spotter in Phoenix even noted the difference.

There's a nuance worth pointing out here. Feathering has its place, but it's a tool for control when you're dealing with a tricky load or tight spot, not something you should do on every single pick. That old timer was right that steady rhythm matters, but don't throw the habit out completely. In my experience, the guys who ride the brake constantly are the ones who end up with overheated drums and sloppy handling, but the guys who never feather at all are usually jerky. It's about matching the machine's natural sway, and that takes time on each specific crane. Your spotter noticing is a good sign, but keep some feathering in your back pocket for the windy days or when you're setting pipe in a trench.
