Heard a superintendent say something that stuck with me all week
That super was talking about a boom truck incident from 2019 where a guy skipped the chart and dropped a 4,000 pound beam on a walkway. He said it took 30 seconds to check the radius but the fines and shutdown cost the company six weeks. Has anyone else noticed that the older hands always stop and verify, while the younger guys act like it slows them down?
Man, I wonder if part of it is that the older guys have actually seen someone get hurt or killed. Not just heard about it in a safety meeting, but watched it happen or had to tell a wife. That stuff stays with you in a way a near miss story never does. The younger guys are working off rules and numbers, while the old timers are working off memories and gut feelings that tell them something is off before the math even confirms it. You can't really train that instinct into somebody, they have to earn it the hard way, and that is the scary part.
