Rant: A simple leveling job turned into a two day ordeal

Got a call for a quick leveling job on a new site in Tacoma, just needed to set a few concrete panels. The ground looked fine, but the first lift showed a huge sinkhole under the topsoil the survey missed. Had to stop everything, get the site boss out, and bring in a whole truck of fill dirt before we could even think about setting the crane pads. What should have been a four hour job took almost sixteen hours over two days. Anyone ever had a site survey be that wrong before?

Survey company foot the bill for the extra work?

Actually the survey company doesn't pay for extra work. The property owner is usually responsible for any cost overruns. I had a boundary dispute last year and ended up paying the surveyor extra for the research and new markers.

Wait, why would the survey company pay? They're doing the work! Lisa's totally right, the property owner has to cover extra costs. I saw this happen with my neighbor last spring. His survey found an old fence line was wrong and he had to pay for all the extra measuring and new stakes. It's just how these things work, the company isn't going to eat the cost for unexpected problems.
