Used to think manual rigging checks were a waste of time until my coworker spotted a cracked hook on a 10-ton lift last Tuesday

I always relied on the pre-shift inspection sheet without really looking close, but watching him point out that hairline fracture changed how I prep every single job now - anyone else have a close call that made them rethink their routine?

Same thing happened to me a few years back with a ratchet strap on a job site. I was hauling some heavy equipment and the strap looked fine from a distance, but after a guy pointed out the frayed webbing near the buckle I got to thinking. Now I check everything like it's a bomb, not just the big stuff but little things like extension cords and ladder rungs too. It's weird how our brains get lazy with repetitive tasks, like we're on autopilot and miss the obvious danger. I've noticed that same pattern in driving, people don't see the car merging because they're zoned out on the routine. It's a real good reminder that shortcuts in attention always catch up with you eventually.

Man, I was the exact same way. Used to breeze through those checklists like they were just busywork until a frayed cable on a boom lift caught my eye at the last second. Definitely made me slow way down and actually look at stuff instead of just signing off on it.
