Dropped $120 on a premium car audio subwoofer, installed it wrong, blew it in 20 minutes

I figured I'd treat myself to a high end sub for my sedan last month. Spent $120 on one that promised crisp lows without distortion. Got home, watched a quick video, and wired it up myself. Forgot to check the impedance match with my amp and the voice coil fried on the first real bass drop. Now I'm back to the stock speaker and $120 poorer. Anyone else make a rookie mistake like this or am I the only one who skips the manual?

Wait, you just grabbed it out of the box and hooked it up without double checking anything? That's wild. I can't believe you didn't even look at the manual for like five minutes. I've definitely done some dumb stuff with car audio before, but skipping the impedance match is a whole different level. That's a pretty pricey mistake for a quick video and a rush job. Honestly, I'm kind of surprised it lasted 20 minutes at all with a mismatched amp.

Yeah @lisa5 got me thinking. I used to wing everything but not anymore.

Yeah, but have you ever thought about how the guy probably didn't even know he was mismatching it? @elizabethg18 is right though, 20 minutes of that setup is basically begging for smoke. I bet that video got a lot more views than the install would have.
