Found a way to not blow my speakers with the volume all the way up
Always used to max out the volume on Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name." Kept getting that crackly distortion at the drop. Tried adjusting the bass and treble settings on my 2018 Honda Civic's stock system. Now I just crank the volume to 80% and let the song breathe. Anyone else mess with their EQ before going full blast?

80% is likely where your amp starts clipping, not where it gets clean power.

Ngl that makes total sense. Most car stereos start pushing dirty power way before the volume knob hits max, and the stock Civic stuff is probably not the cleanest either. Cranking the EQ before 80% just makes it clip sooner.

My buddy Kyle blew out his factory Civic speakers last summer doing exactly this. He had a 2015 LX and would crank the volume to 45 out of 50 with the bass boost maxed out. The distortion was so bad you could hear the voice coils rubbing through the door panels. He was convinced it was just "loud" until we pulled the door card off and saw the paper cones literally tearing apart at the edges. He spent $400 on replacement speakers and a cheap amp after that.
