Got stuck in traffic on I-75 yesterday and finally found my jam

I was creeping along near the exit for almost an hour with my kid in the back seat and out of nowhere "Mr. Brightside" came on and I just cranked it to 11 without thinking. She started laughing and singing along and now we have a new car ritual where she picks the volume song on the way to school.

Haven't you heard that song enough to know the opening synth by heart now though? I swear half the reason kids get so attached to specific songs is cause they know it drives their parents a little crazy.

Wait, did your kid just discover the universal truth that volume fixes everything? My buddy Ben had a similar thing with his daughter and "Shut Up and Dance" on the way to daycare. He said she started demanding it every morning and would scream "DADDY DANCE" if he tried to play something else. They had to make a whole playlist of just that one song on repeat for like three months straight. He still can't hear that opening synth without instinctively checking his rearview mirror.

Oh man, have you read that one parenting study that said kids basically imprint on songs during car rides like ducks do with the first thing they see? I swear I heard it on some podcast where they talked about how the repetition and the confined space of a car creates this weird little ritual. My nephew did the exact same thing with "Happy" by Pharrell, except he'd only accept the version from the Despicable Me soundtrack, if you can believe it. He'd start fussing if his dad even tried a different song that had a similar beat, it had to be that specific one. That rearview mirror thing your buddy mentioned is so real, I bet he still braces for it even when he's driving alone.
