My buddy told me I was blasting the wrong mix of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and it actually made sense
I always cranked the 2011 remaster version because it was louder and punchier. A friend who used to work at a recording studio in Nashville sat me down and played the original 1975 mix back to back with it. Said the remaster crushed the dynamics and flattened out the stereo spread. I argued for like 20 minutes but then he put headphones on me and I had to admit he was right. The original has way more air and the drums actually breathe. Still blast it at stoplights but now I seek out the old pressings. Anyone else ever get schooled on a song you thought you knew perfectly?

Same thing happened to me with Nirvana's Nevermind actually.

Yeah, the Nevermind thing is a classic one. I had the same problem with that album where it felt like a totally different album after the first few listens. What helped me was to just let it sit for a while, like a month or two, then come back to it without any expectations. I put it on in the background while doing chores, not trying to analyze it, just letting it play. After that, I started picking up on the weirder stuff like the quiet parts and the little noises that make it sound so raw. Might sound dumb but pretending it was a brand new band I'd never heard of helped me get past the whole "classic album" hype.
