PSA: My go-to car jam turned out to be a cover version for 15 years

I was blasting that one classic rock song everyone knows, thinking it was the original band, until I heard the actual 1970s version on a Spotify deep dive last Wednesday. Turns out the version I've been cranking is a 1990s cover that totally changed the tempo and guitar tone. Has anyone else had their whole car karaoke routine ruined by finding out you've been belting out a cover this whole time?

@sam17 Yeah I read somewhere that it was originally by a soul singer named Gloria Jones back in the 60s. Soft Cell definitely made it their own though with that synth sound. Wild how many songs we think are originals are actually covers. There's a whole list of hits like that from the 80s.

Question why it's such a big deal honestly. I get that it's a cool fact to know but a ton of songs from that era were covers. The 80s were basically built on borrowing and remaking old stuff. Soft Cell's version is what most people know and love so does it really matter who did it first? I mean we don't get worked up when movies are based on books do we. Sometimes it feels like people just want to sound smart with these trivia facts. As long as the song slaps who cares if it's a cover or an original.
