Rant: Hit 130 decibels on my stereo last week and my daughter hid under her seat
Honestly, I always blast 'Kickstart My Heart' by Motley Crue when I get on the highway. Last Tuesday I got it peaking at 130 dB on my meter near the old Route 9 overpass. But my 12 year old started covering her ears and saying it hurt. So is there a limit where max volume stops being fun and just becomes a problem, or should I tell her to toughen up? Anyone else deal with this kind of backlash from passengers?

130 dB is loud but not exactly blow-your-eardrums-out territory, a lot of subs hit that pretty regularly. Maybe just ease up a couple notches so your daughter isn't traumatized over a car ride.

Honestly, I get what you're saying but 130 dB inside a car is a whole different animal than hearing it from outside. The sound waves bounce off the windows and roof, so it hits way harder than the same number at a show or in an open space. Plus, we're talking about a kid who doesn't choose to be there, you know? It's not about the sub hitting hard, it's about the pressure and discomfort for someone with smaller ears and no control over the volume. I've seen grown adults get queasy from lower levels than that in a sealed cabin. So yeah, easing up a couple notches makes sense, but even that might still be a lot for a little one.
