Vent: blasting a song at full volume in a rental car got me a $250 cleaning fee in Phoenix
Rented a car at the Phoenix airport in March and cranked my go-to track so loud the bass made the door panels buzz, which I figured was fine. Turns out the sub rattled a trim clip loose and the speaker grille on the rear deck popped off, and the rental place hit me with a $250 cleaning and repair charge when I dropped it off. Now I press my palm on the rear deck first, and if anything feels loose I keep the volume under halfway and just sing off key instead. Anyone else wreck a rental with a bass heavy song, or am I the only one who learned this the expensive way?
Man that trim clip thing is what gets you, not even the sound itself. I'd take it a step further and say check the whole cabin before you even plug in your phone, door panels, rear deck, that little cover over the spare tire, all of it. Rental companies in Phoenix specifically seem to know bass damage when they see it because of the heat, plastic gets brittle out there and a clip pops way easier than it would somewhere cooler. So its not just you, its you plus a desert climate working against you. Halfway volume and bad singing is honestly the safest move in a rental.
The one time I actually did the full walk around, I still missed the little clip on the rear deck and heard it rattle the second the bass dropped, so I just turned the thing off and drove in silence like a chump. Checking all that stuff before you even plug in is solid advice though, because once you are parked in a lot with the engine off you are not about to start pulling panels in front of everybody. I never thought about the Phoenix heat making the plastic brittle but that makes total sense, dry air and sun beating on a car all day would turn any clip into a cracker. Halfway volume with bad singing is honestly a lifestyle for me, my voice is terrible and I have accepted it. Do you pop the trunk and poke around too, or is that going too far for a rental?
