Just changed my mind about paying for renter's insurance
My roommate thought I was dumb for spending $15 a month on it. Then his laptop got stolen during a party and I got a full $1200 replacement check in 3 days. Has anyone else had a cheap monthly cost save them big?

People always think they're saving money by skipping small costs like this. Then something happens and they're out way more than they would have paid over years. It's like people who don't change their oil on time because it's an extra forty bucks, then their engine blows and it's thousands. Or skipping a ten dollar car wash in the winter but then the salt rusts out your frame. A few bucks a month is nothing compared to one big hit.

Had my transmission die at 90k miles because the previous owner skipped fluid changes. Cost me 3 grand for a used one. Checked the service records and sure enough, not a single trans fluid change in the whole history. A 60 dollar service every 30k miles would've kept that thing going. Same with brake fluid, most people don't even know it absorbs water until their calipers seize up. I keep a little notebook in my glovebox and write down every single thing I do to the car. It's boring but it saves my wallet every time.
