Rant: My roommate ate my entire birthday cake and blamed the dog

I came home from work last Tuesday to find my chocolate cake from the bakery reduced to crumbs on the counter. The dog was locked in my room, so that excuse didn't fly. I asked him about it and he just shrugged and said he was hungry after a late shift. Has anyone else had a roommate who just takes your stuff without asking, or is this a special kind of bad?

Had a roommate once who ate my leftovers all the time. I'd come home from work and my food I specifically labeled would be gone. Caught him red handed one night eating my lasagna straight from the container. He said he didn't think I'd notice because he ate it all and threw away the evidence. Some people just have zero boundaries and think their hunger is more important than the stuff you paid for. Your roommate blaming the dog is almost impressive levels of lazy. Hope you made him buy you a new cake at least.

Did you see that study about roommates and food theft, @park.robin?

...and then he had the nerve to say he'd replace it next week. I've been in your shoes, my old roommate used to eat my frozen pizzas and then claim he thought they were his. What worked for me was getting one of those mini fridges with a lock on it for my room. Kept my stuff in there and put a note on the main fridge saying the kitchen fridge was his territory now. He got the message pretty quick when he couldn't blame the dog anymore. Also, if you can, get a new roommate when your lease is up. Some people just never learn boundaries no matter what you do.
