Can we talk about the 'write what you know' advice?

I always thought it was just a boring rule to make stories feel safe, but a workshop in Seattle last year changed my mind. The teacher made us write a scene about a specific job we'd actually done, and my story about working a 4am bakery shift got way more real details. Now I get that it's about using real feelings, not just facts. Has anyone else had a prompt that flipped a writing rule for them?

That workshop idea is smart. Heard a writer say it's more about knowing the emotional truth than the exact facts.

Honestly danielb43, that emotional truth tip saved me when my facts got fuzzy.
