Caught myself writing the same villain motivation for 3 years
It clicked during a critique group at Barnes & Noble last Tuesday - my 'vengeful ex-boss' character in every single story just wanted revenge for being fired. Three people read three different projects and all asked, 'Is this the same guy?' Has anyone else realized one of their plot hooks is just a copy-paste of the same idea?

Oh man, I totally get this! I had the same problem with a 'betrayed by a friend' plot that kept showing up in all my drafts. What finally helped me was swapping the motivation around - instead of revenge, I made her want to prove she was better off without them, which changed the whole story vibe. Also started keeping a list of different reasons people do things, like protecting their family or just being scared of change.

Love that idea, I started keeping a list of character fears myself and it helped me break out of my same old plots.
