Debate: Should we use real trauma in writing prompts or keep it light?
Got a critique last month from a writing group member in Austin who said my prompts about grief were "too dark to be useful for practice." I think tough subjects can push us to write better, but maybe they're right that prompts should stay fun - what side do you land on?

I get what your critique partner was saying about keeping things light, but I see it differently. Grief and tough subjects can actually make writing prompts more powerful because they force you to dig into real emotions and avoid shallow cliches. Light prompts have their place, but if we only stick to "fun" topics we miss out on developing the skills to handle harder material with care.

Did ya read that Writer's Digest piece on trauma-informed storytelling?

Has anyone else noticed how writing about the heavy stuff actually makes the lighter prompts easier to pull off? I remember trying to write a funny scene once and it fell totally flat until I realized I hadn't let myself feel any real sadness in the piece first.
