I gave my protagonist a boring job on purpose, and it actually worked.
Everyone says your main character needs a cool or dangerous career. I made mine a file clerk in a Milwaukee insurance office. The quiet routine created this amazing tension when her normal life got disrupted. Has anyone else found a dull setting helped their plot more than a flashy one?

Totally get that, normal is way more relatable.

Notice how trying too hard to be normal can make you seem fake, like @loganthompson said about keeping it simple. The real trick is to stop thinking about being relatable at all. Just talk about what you actually care about and the right people will get it.

Yeah, I felt the same way! I just kept things simple and honest, and that really helped me connect with people. It's solid advice, @dylan604.

Actually, being normal isn't the goal either. It's more about being yourself, even if that's weird. Then you find your people.
