I was stuck between two prompts for a contest and picked wrong
For a local library contest, I had to choose between a prompt about a haunted coffee shop or one about a lost key that opens nothing. I went with the coffee shop (it felt safer, you know?). The story came out flat, like bad decaf. My friend who picked the key prompt won with this weird, beautiful tale about memory. Anyone have tips for trusting the weirder idea next time?

Wait, a key that opens nothing? That's genius!

My grandpa had a key like that on his old key ring for years, a tiny brass one. He said it was for a toolbox he lost in a move back in the 80s. Never took it off though, just kept it with his house and car keys. I asked him why once and he just shrugged, said it felt wrong to get rid of it. There's something about carrying a piece of a past mistake or lost thing that makes sense to me now.
