Actually, that story is a bit of a myth. She wrote it because her sister bet she couldn't finish a good detective story. So the bet was more about finishing a whole book, not just starting one.

Bets and dares can be weirdly motivating. A friend of mine once bet he couldn't give up soda for a month, and he actually did it just to win twenty bucks. The whole thing started because he said it was easy, and someone called his bluff. Makes you wonder how many projects get finished just because someone said it couldn't be done.
