Just hit 100k words on my fantasy novel draft and it made me rethink my whole outline.

Honestly, both takes are missing the point. The first draft is just the raw material. Hitting a big word count and realizing your outline is wrong is part of the real work. That's not a warm-up or the main event, it's you finally seeing the actual story. Now you get to build the real thing from it.

Wow, so the first draft was just a really long warm-up?

Disagree completely, mason.sam. Calling it a warm-up makes it sound useless, and that's just wrong. The first draft is where you actually figure out what you're trying to say (the messy, real stuff). Without that ugly first try, you'd have nothing real to fix later. It's the main event, not the practice.
