Rant: I blew $180 on a prompt journal that just recycled starter sentences I could find for free
Last month I finally caved and bought one of those guided writing prompt journals everyone on Instagram pushes, the kind with a faux leather cover and a ribbon bookmark. $180 for 52 weeks of prompts, plus shipping to Cleveland. I opened it and flipped through maybe 90 pages before I noticed something weird. At least half the prompts were the exact same starter lines I've seen in free writing groups for years, stuff like 'write about a door that won't open' and 'describe a meal your character refuses to eat.' The other half were so vague they didn't spark anything, just empty stuff like 'explore your feelings about change.' I want to push back on the idea that paying for prompts makes you more serious about writing, because a generic line with nice paper around it is still a generic line. I started a free prompt thread in my local library writing group in Lakewood and we got 30 people showing up in two weeks, way more energy than anything that book gave me. So before you drop real cash on a fancy prompt journal, ask yourself if you've already seen those lines somewhere for nothing. Has anyone else bought one of these and felt like they got played?
