Spent $140 on a plotting course that just recycled free advice

Last month I signed up for an online course about story structure because I kept getting stuck around chapter 4. The instructor promised a secret framework that would fix my pacing issues. Turns out every lesson was just a rewording of stuff I already read in two library books and a dozen blog posts. I could have spent that money on new notebooks and still come out ahead. Has anyone else paid for a writing class and felt the material was just a repackaged version of what you can find for free?

Honestly, that’s the thing that gets me about these courses. I read an interview with a literary agent once who basically said the real secret is just finishing the draft and learning from authors you already love, not paying for someone to tell you the same three-act structure everyone knows. Ngl, I’ve seen the exact same beat sheet charts on free Pinterest boards that some of these “pro” courses charge $200 for. The chapter 4 slump is usually because you don’t have enough conflict set up early, and a ten-minute video on stakes can fix that better than any fancy framework. Good call on the notebooks, at least those give you something tangible to scribble in.

Man, I used to swear by paid writing courses and thought the experts were holding back secrets you couldn't find anywhere else. But after dropping cash on three different ones, I finally saw that they're mostly just the same beat sheets and pacing tricks dressed up with fancier names. That chapter 4 wall is real, but it's usually a plot thread problem you can fix with a simple outline, not something a $140 course is gonna magically unlock.
