That $60 story structure book is a scam for pantsers

Paid 60 bucks for a popular plotting guide and it locked me into outlines so rigid my drafts read like HVAC schematics. If you write by the seat of your pants, save the cash and just steal your prompts from local news headlines instead. Anyone else get burned by a writing method that sounded better in theory?

Those plotting books usually assume you already know the difference between pantsing and just not outlining yet. I paid $45 for one years ago and it spent half the pages on character questionnaires, not structure. The local news tip is actually solid, but you can also grab a deck of tarot cards and pull three for a setup, conflict, and twist. The real scam is pretending one method works for everyone, not the book itself.
