Got hit by a fake invoice scam last month at my shop in Austin
Someone sent an invoice that looked exactly like my regular supplier, down to the logo and email format. It was for $847 on a wire transfer and I almost paid it before I noticed the bank account was off by one digit. How often are you guys checking vendor payment details before you hit send?

You said 'treat every payment like it's suspicious' and that's exactly what I've started doing after my close call. I actually went a step further and set up a rule where any invoice over $500 has to go through a verbal confirmation with my rep before I touch it. It feels like overkill some days but that's way cheaper than losing eight hundred bucks. The thing is these scammers are getting so good that we're basically training ourselves to be paranoid for a living now. I don't see it getting any better either so I guess we're stuck double checking every little detail from now on.

Man that's brutal but honestly I checked mine right after reading this and found a similar one for $1,247 that I almost missed too. The invoice was from "QuickBooks Services" which I use but the email was like quickbooks-servicessupport@randomgmail.com. I mean who has time to verify every single number on every invoice every time? But I guess that's exactly what they're counting on (you getting lazy). These scammers are getting way too good at copying logos and formatting so now I have to treat every payment like it's suspicious which is exhausting but necessary.
