My cousin in Denver got a weird text that almost fooled her

She got a text that looked like it was from her bank, asking her to click a link to verify a large purchase. The link went to a site that looked exactly like her bank's login page. She called me before doing anything, and we checked the sender's number - it was a regular 10-digit number, not the bank's official short code. Anyone else seen these fake text scams getting more convincing lately?

Those fake bank sites are the real problem. The link might show a padlock and everything, making it look safe. They often use a real bank logo and copy the exact layout, which is what trips people up. Checking the sender is smart, but the site itself is the convincing part.

That's a scary one, glad she called you first! Honestly though, the sender info is the biggest red flag for me. @grant.sam is right that the fake sites look perfect, but I always check the number before I even look at a link. A real bank alert almost never comes from a regular phone number. If it's not their official short code, it's an instant delete for me. The texts are getting better, but that part still gives them away.
