My cousin's kid asked me why I had a sticker over my laptop camera

I was visiting family in Boise last week and my 8-year-old nephew pointed at my laptop and said, 'What's that for?' I told him it was to keep bad people from seeing me, and he just said, 'Oh, like a door lock for your face.' That simple idea really stuck with me. I realized I'd been doing it for years without really thinking about the 'why' for anyone else. Has anyone else had a kid's question make a basic security habit feel new again?

Door lock for your face" is a perfect way to put it. That kid gets it better than most adults. We slap these things on and it becomes routine, but explaining it to someone who has no clue makes you remember the actual threat. It's not just being paranoid, it's a real lock on a real window into your home.

Wait, you have to explain this to people who don't get it? I figured everyone just knew it was a basic security thing by now.

Door lock for your face" is a cute story, but it's just fear mongering for most people. The actual risk of a random hacker watching you is tiny, way less than getting hit by a car. You're just putting tape on your screen to feel better.
