My neighbor's smart doorbell got hacked and it made me check my own stuff

I was talking to my neighbor, Bob, last week and he told me his video doorbell started talking to him. It wasn't him or his wife, it was some random voice asking weird questions. He had to pull the battery to shut it off. It turned out he never changed the default password from when he set it up two years ago (he admitted it was something simple like 'admin123'). That really got me thinking, because I have a couple of those smart plugs and a thermostat. I went home and spent about an hour going through every single smart thing in my house, making sure each one had a strong, unique password and that two-factor login was turned on where I could. It's scary how we just plug this stuff in and forget about it. Has anyone else had a wake-up call like this with their smart home gear?

I read a report that 15% of smart homes use default passwords, which even worries me about @valh32's toaster.

Ngl Bob's story gave me chills, made me run and check my own passwords too.
