My old IT mentor taught me password security in a gas station parking lot
Back in 2015, my first IT manager Dave pulled me aside after I set the office WiFi password to "password123". He said "Ruby, if you're gonna be lazy about this, at least make it funny. Use a whole sentence with spaces and a number." We spent 10 minutes in his beat up Ford F-150 coming up with passphrases from movie quotes. I still use that method today for all my accounts. Anyone else have a coworker who dropped some unexpected wisdom on you?

Did your friend's mentor also teach them in a car, or was it somewhere weirder?

That's actually a solid bit of advice right there. Passphrases are way easier to remember and way harder to crack than some jumbled mess of letters.
