PSA: My free VPN trial logged my traffic for 2 weeks before I noticed
I downloaded a free VPN from a random ad in June to watch a show on a work trip. The fine print said it kept usage logs for 'service improvement' and I almost missed it. After 2 weeks I checked my router's DNS settings and saw requests going to a server I didn't set up. Switched to a paid one that costs 5 bucks a month and ran a leak test the same day. Has anyone else caught their VPN rerouting stuff without telling them?

Used to think free VPNs were fine for casual stuff like streaming shows when traveling. Then mine did the exact same thing, routing my phone's traffic through a third party I never picked. Checked after a weird battery drain and found requests going to some server in another country. That flipped my whole view on them. Now I read every privacy policy line by line before installing anything. Better to spend a few bucks than hand over your browsing history to strangers.
