PSA: My old router's default password was still set and I found a bunch of weird devices connected

I was checking my network at home and saw a ton of gadgets I didn't own, like a smart plug from a brand I've never heard of. I logged into the router and found the admin password was still the factory default from when I got it two years ago. Has anyone else found something like this and what's the best way to lock things down after a scare?

Did you check if any of those weird devices were still active after you changed the password?

Yikes, that's a serious wake-up call. I mean, I'm probably the worst at this stuff, my old router's password was literally just the word "password" for like three years. First thing, change that admin password to something actually strong, not like mine was. Then you gotta check for any firmware updates for the router, they patch security holes. After that, maybe set up a guest network for any weird smart gadgets you don't fully trust.
