Question about password managers after a neighbor's close call

My neighbor Dave got his email hacked last Tuesday because he used the same password for his bank and his gaming forum, and someone scraped it from a breach list. I told him to grab a password manager and he laughed, saying he'd rather just write things down in a notebook, which honestly scared me more. Has anyone here actually convinced a stubborn friend or family member to switch, and what finally worked for them?
