The day my neighbor showed me his text message history changed how I think about phishing

Last Tuesday my neighbor Bob came over asking if I knew anything about computers. He had clicked a link in a text that said his package was delayed and needed him to confirm his address. Within an hour his bank account was drained of 400 dollars. He showed me the message thread on his phone and I could see he had gotten similar messages five times over the past month. Every single one looked exactly like a real shipping notification from a major company. The scammers just kept trying until he finally slipped up. Has anyone else seen these package delivery texts getting way more convincing lately?

Did you see that piece on 60 Minutes about the scam call centers in Southeast Asia? They literally have scripts and training manuals for this stuff, it's wild. Poor Bob, that sucks but those texts really do look legit.

Yeah I read that scammers buy phone numbers from data brokers...
