Had to pick between the self checkout line with 3 people or the cashier line with 1 person

I went with the cashier because the self checkout always freezes up on me, but the lady in front had a price check that took 8 minutes and I was late getting back from lunch. Has anyone else noticed the self checkout lines move faster even when they're longer?

Wait, are you me? Because this literally happened to me last week. I always pick the self checkout for that exact reason, it just glitches out half the time but I figure the cashier line will be longer. Ended up standing there for 12 minutes while the clerk had to call a manager for some coupon issue. The self checkout line was wrapped around the corner but it still would've been faster.
