The library book return slot ate my overdue novel last Friday
Drove 20 minutes to the downtown branch in Cleveland, dropped off a book I was 3 days late on, and the slot jammed with someone's giant cookbook stuck halfway so mine bounced back and got soaked in the rain. Has anyone else had a drop box betray them right before a fine deadline?

Honestly that slot probably saw your overdue book and decided to play judge, jury, and executioner all at once. I swear those return bins have a personal vendetta against anyone who is even one minute late. Mine once ate a DVD so badly that I had to call the library and convince them I wasn't lying, they acted like I was running some black market for old copies of Matilda. The rain soaking your book is just insult added to injury, like the universe really wanted to make sure you paid that fine. Next time just hand it to a human at the desk, even if it means waiting in line behind someone checking out 47 picture books. At least a person can't claim your novel got lost in a mysterious portal.
