Thought that $30 infrared thermometer was a gimmick but it actually found a cold spot in my attic
My buddy kept telling me to get one for spotting drafts but I figured my hand was good enough since I could feel cold air near the windows. Then I borrowed his last week and pointed it at the ceiling and found a 15 degree temp drop near the vent pipe that I never noticed before. Anyone else find a cheap tool that surprised them or am I just late to the party on this thing?

Wait 15 degrees? That's a huge gap, I had no idea those things could pick up something that specific.

The 15 degree gap is actually about what you'd expect from most modern thermostats, they're surprisingly good at detecting small changes. You might be thinking of the old dial ones where you had to eyeball it, those were way less accurate. Digital sensors in the newer models can pick up temperature differences as small as a degree or two, which is wild when you think about it.

Right?! It's actually INSANE how sensitive those digital ones are. My old thermostat would let the house get freezing before kicking on, but the new one adjusts like every five minutes if there's a draft or something. It drives me crazy sometimes but I guess it's better than guessing.
