TIL my car key fob dies quietly at the worst possible spot
Standing in the Costco parking lot in Tacoma around 6pm last Tuesday, I pressed the unlock button and nothing. Not even a flicker from the lights. I figured the battery just needed a swap, but I couldn't get the door open to grab the spare because the manual key slot was hidden under this tiny plastic cover I'd never touched in 4 years. Took me 10 minutes of fiddling with my thumbnail and a receipt corner to pop it off, then the key turned but the alarm started blaring in the middle of the lot. Everyone stared while I stood there looking like I was stealing my own hatchback. Finally got it started, drove home, and replaced the CR2032 battery in 2 minutes flat. So my whole afternoon got wrecked by a $4 battery I should've changed back in January. Has anyone else had that moment where the simplest part of your car becomes a puzzle at the exact second you need it most?
Keeping a spare CR2032 in the glovebox saved me last winter, same exact thing. Also popped that little key cover off once with a flathead and now it comes off easy, so worth doing that at home before you actually need it.
