For years I microwaved popcorn the normal way... then my roommate showed me this.

I always burned half the bag or got a ton of unpopped kernels no matter what setting I used. Last week my roommate flipped the bag upside down before hitting start and said it lets the oil spread better. Has anyone else got a weird everyday trick that actually works better than the obvious approach?

Microwave temps are actually way more consistent if you preheat the glass turntable first.

Hold on, you're telling me you actually preheat the glass plate in the microwave? Like, you run it empty first? @betty_palmer I've been nuking leftovers for years and never once thought about warming up the turntable itself. Does that really fix cold spots, or is this one of those things only serious cooks do? My frozen burrito always has one bite that's lava and another that's ice.

Cut the empty run thing, that's a good way to crack the glass plate if it's cold and you hit it with high power. Just put a mug of water in there for a minute or two before your food. The steam helps warm everything up evenly and keeps the plate safe. The real trick for your burrito problem is to let it sit for 30 seconds after the first minute and then flip it before going again. Letting the heat spread through the middle before you nuke it again makes a bigger difference than a hot plate. Skip the empty microwave rodeo, just use some water.
