My car's AC gave out during a heatwave last Tuesday

So I'm driving home from work and it's like 95 degrees outside, right? I'm about 20 minutes into my commute when I notice the air from the vents is just warm. I turn the dial all the way to max cold and nothing changes, just a steady stream of hot air. I had to roll the windows down, but that just blasted me with even hotter air from the road. I pulled over at a gas station and popped the hood, but I don't know anything about car AC systems. I just saw the compressor clutch wasn't engaging when I turned it on. Ended up driving the rest of the way home sweating like crazy. I'm dreading the repair bill, but I can't handle another drive like that. Has anyone else had their AC die suddenly in the summer and what did it end up costing to fix?

My neighbor's AC fix last month was over six hundred bucks for a leak and recharge.

Did they at least find the leak first before charging that much?

Did my friend's guy charge her $550 just to say "yep it's the compressor" and leave without fixing it?
