Question about what would happen if you lost your phone in a big city

I was in Chicago last month and my phone died while I was trying to find a train station. I had no map and no way to call anyone. It made me think, what if you had to get home with no help from a device? Now I always write down the address of where I'm staying on a piece of paper in my wallet. Has anyone else had a close call like that?
