Update: My 'quick' shower drain fix turned into a 4 hour ordeal

I had 15 minutes to clear a slow drain in my apartment off Maple Street before a work call. Two hours later I had taken apart the whole U-bend (found a toothbrush cap and a wad of hair from like 3 roommates ago) and it was still backing up. Has anyone else had a plumbing job that looked simple but ate up half your Saturday?

That "wad of hair from like 3 roommates ago" really got me. I think nobody's talking about how old plumbing just collects random stuff over years, not months. @elliot45, you mentioned a snake, but sometimes that just pushes the clog deeper if the pipe has a weird bend. I had a similar thing with my place off Elm Street - took apart the trap, found a twist tie and some gravel from a houseplant, but the real problem was the pipe itself had a sag in it. Water just pooled there and collected debris over time. Had to get a plumber to brace it up, eight dollars for a bracket and a half hour of labor. That stupid sag added an hour to my "quick" fix.

Did you try a drain snake after you put it back together? That's what finally worked for me after fighting with a clog for three hours last year.
